Weekend fun
Well my mom and I got the bathroom painted on Friday and the front entrance way patched up and painted, which was good as Cohen was not quite as cooperative on Saturday. I think he is again teething as he is drooling like crazy and was out of sorts yesterday, not napping properly and just not his jolly self. I even took him to Walmart last night just to get him out of the house so he would stop crying, it helped for a bit. Saturday night was a long one though - lucky Josh wasn't home as Cohen slept with me for the first time ever. He had a high temp and would wake every 30 min to an hour crying and I would rock him back to sleep, between that and the coughing that I would have to run downstairs and do so I wouldn't wake him - not much sleep was had by me.
Josh and Carter got home this afternoon from Swift Current and we spent it outside cleaning my car, while Carter played in the snow that is left. Carter had a good time as grandma Janet gives him her undivided attention but he said that he missed me lots - nice to be loved.
I am surprising Josh and we are off to MooseJaw for the day tomorrow, after we drop Carter off at school. I have arranged for my dad to pick up Carter (he met the teacher last week) and mom will be over for the day to look after the kids. It is supposed to be nice so hope to walk around downtown and hit the temple garden pool for awhile - just relax. Originally I was planning it overnight but thought that would be harder for my mom and a waste of money on a hotel room - however I could use 1 peaceful night of sleep without being woken up (maybe when I'm 40!).

Looking back....
Cohen is definitely the rashiest kid I have seen. Every day some sort of rash appears on a new part of his body - hoping it is just a stage in his life.

I think I have created a monster by always giving him something to hold onto. It all started at about 5 months, Cohen would always pull his soother out with his finger while sleeping and then start to cry so I started putting another soother in his hand. Now he has to have at least one thing in each hand at all times - usually the yellow drum stick and the red bracelet (I used to wear but found it easier to give to him than have him constantly pulling it). Yesterday he went to sleep with the yellow drum stick, plastic ring and bracelet (in one hand) and toothbrush & plastic spoon in the other hand. He woke up with all 5 things still in his grip.
The separation anxiety is still there but the nights are getting better, it is not such a struggle and he hasn't been getting up at 5am - thank gosh!
Carter was the "helping hand" at school today and along with his other duties, he knew his phone number. I recall back to my days of kindergarten and remember that my best friend Laurie had to cheat and help me with my phone number (funny how I ended up being the "numbers" person). It truly is amazing how much kids can learn at this age if they are given the knowledge to absorb. I was told that children have the greatest learning capacity between ages 1 - 5 and it begins to decrease after that. I believe it and have embraced this opportunity with Carter fully, he amazes me daily at what his brain can process, how he reasons and understands.
It is our 6 year wedding anniversary on Saturday - wow where did that time go!
Josh is taking Carter to Swift Current to watch curling and visit with his mom for Fri & Sat so it will be just Cohen and I until Sunday. I hope to get the bathroom painted with some help from my mom and the exersaucer.

Still fighting it
We are still having crazy nights with Cohen, waking up once and not wanting to go back to sleep and then up at 5am - ugh! He now has a rash on his face and tummy, starting to think this one is just gonna be one of those rashy kids. You can sure tell how much more aware he is of things and really wants to get going but just can't quite figure that crawling thing out yet and the fact that he can hardly lift that chubby belly off the ground.
Carter has managed to get my cold and his always seems to go to his chest, so he has been coughing like crazy. Last night it went to the other end and he has had the runs. The first time it happened he tooted and it was wet - the look on his face his was priceless - poor guy. After 5 pair of gotch, that part has ended and his cough seems to have subsided as well.
Thanks to all that donated to help Carter help "save babies lives", their preschool did amazing not sure of the exact total but impressive from what I understand.
St. Patty's day was also green day at preschool so here is Carter being festive.
Grandma Janet left today after being here for the week and Carter will miss her dearly, as each morning he would come downstairs to check that she was still here - since her visits are usually much shorter. However, it is funny that today he said he missed me and gave me a big hug and I realized why - even though I had not gone anywhere, him and I hadn't spent much time together this week. What a precious little guy we have - I will miss my days with him dearly when I go back to work.
I am finally almost over my cold, which has been around over a week. Unfortunately when you are a mom, whether you are sick or not, you are still a mom and needed just the same.

Separation anxiety
Cohen is right on track for the "separation anxiety" stage which usually happens between 8 and 9 months. Our good little sleeper has decided to fight going to bed - crying at the top of his lungs (thank gosh Carter is a heavy sleeper) if you aren't standing beside the crib. Even if he is asleep and you leave the room, he starts whaling again. Now he has decided that 5 am is time to get up so the nights have been short and days long - hence why I probably caught the cold that I did.
We keep asking Carter about a sleep over at someone's house and he says that he will miss us too much, so apparently separation anxiety happens at a number of stages in childhood. Carter got a big gash on his cheek (with blood and all) from trying to break his snow fort the other day - no picture but it was quite traumatic for him anyway.
Grandma Janet is in town visiting for the week, as she had hand surgery and has some time off work. It is nice to have her visit and someone to help entertain the kids, especially since I can't leave the room without Cohen crying.

8 months yesterday
Cohen turned 8 months old yesterday but you'd never know it by his size. We had an appt with the pediatrician and he weighs 22 lbs 4 oz and is almost 29 inches long (in the 95th percentile). Carter was almost these exact measurements at 9 months. Chewing on everything but no sign of any teeth yet. Carter was 9 months when he got his first one.

Cohen's rash has improved as we got some medicated bum cream (like an extrastrength polysporin) from the pediatrician. Still not sure what it was from but hope that never happens again as it was awful.
He is at that stage where he cries whenever I leave the room so I now have to lug him from room to room wherever I go, which is alot of work in a four level split. He has not been going to sleep very good lately either, lots of crying and fighting it (unless we are in the car of course - then it is lights out with no problem).
As I said, he is rolling around everywhere and tonight he rolled under the coffee table and found out if he held onto the rungs he could pull himself up. Doing chinups at 8 months - so proud.

Lots to say in a week ...
I planned on blogging last week but not sure what happened. Actually I do know what happened, Cohen has been fighting a fierce diaper rash and been out of sorts. He barely napped all last week/wekend and wanted to be held. First I thought it was mangoes, then figured it may be the plastic pants over the cloth diapers that do not breath and now I think it may be teething. Whatever it is, I hope it ends soon as it looks like his skin is burnt it is so red and is now peeling like a sun burn - poor little guy but he is such a trooper. He is definitely a momma's boy these days, if I leave the room for a second the crying and tears start flowing until he sees me again. He isn't crawling but sure wants to get places as he rolls around the floor like crazy and leans over as if to try to pull himself up. I am thankful he is not mobile yet, as kid proofing a four level split is not going to be easy.
As for Carter, Josh took him skating for the first time in quite a few weeks and he skated by himself about 1/4 of the way down the ice. He has just found his balance I guess, as he even catches himself if he is about to fall. Soccer has a few weeks left and Tae Kwon Do wraps up this week - he is doing great in both but tends to get frustrated easy if he isn't good at it right away (gets that from his mom). He says he wants to do gymnastics again so we will see as the next session starts in April and runs til June. He is busy "saving babies lives" at school, as they are participating in fundraising for the Z99 radiothon - look out if we haven't hit you up for a donation yet. He got his second progress report from preschool and has improved on the few things that he was just "beginning" or "developing". He enjoys school once he gets there but still asks me every morning if he has school today and lets out a big sigh when I say yes - so dramatic.
Carter is now definitely wanting to go out more and do things with other kids rather than stay home so much anymore. He is asking about sleepovers - only if kids stay at our house though of course.
I went to Globe Theatre on Wednesday "Tuesdays with Morrie" what a simple yet moving play. Hard to believe there could be so much emotion in 90 minutes. I was drained by the end of the play and it left me with alot to think about - death, life, happiness, etc. Once again I realized that I am glad to be 35 with 2 wonderful kids and a loving husband - not wishing I was 20 again. A few good reminders:
- Happiness is only what you make it
- Love and emotions make you a stronger person
- Take every day as it comes and appreciate it
- Don't take anything for granted or wish your life away
- Every year just means more experience in the job of life
