Busy Halloween Day

Hard to believe that it is almost November! The day turned out to be fairly nice for the kids.

The kids and I spent the majority of the afternoon at the hospital keeping grandma company and visiting grandpa when he was awake - the kids were so good.

We took the kids around the neighborhood around 5 pm and they did great, Cohen loves to ride in the wagon and Carter is a pro at saying trick or treat and thank you. When Cohen would get to the door he would bang on it just like Carter and sometimes invite himself right into people's houses. Of course, the kids made out like bandits on the candy and Carter felt that since he had so much, he would give some out of his basket to the kids that came to our door - he is such a caring & thoughtful boy.

I ran back to the hospital to visit again for an hour. When I got home I bathed Cohen while Carter gave out candy - he was making the kids say different things before giving them treats - what a joker!

Tomorrow is the day.....

It has been hard to find time to blog these days. Any "free time" - term used loosely when you are a mother - should be spent studying but I have not been able to focus these days. Instead we have been spending a great deal of time over at mom & dad's. Dad has not had many good days lately and it seems to put a smile on his face when we come and visit.

It is so crazy how kids seem to have a second sense or intuition - not sure what it actually is but it is amazing. The other night when we were over at mom & dad's and Cohen must have went over to grandpa and given him a hug about 8 times. I have never seen him do that to anyone else, including me or Josh - it is like he knew that grandpa is sick and needs all the love he can get. Carter has been very emotional these days too, I am sure it is a combination of him seeing my emotions (althoughI try to hide the tears from him), no afternoon naps because of school, different people taking him to school each day and not being home with me anymore - back at the sitters full-time.

Tomorrow is the day dad has his first consultation with the cancer clinic to find out what the next steps are going to be. We have been waiting what feels like forever for this day and now that it is here I don't really want it to come, as I am so scared what we will find out. We have to hope for the best and stay strong.

I am in a course the next 2 full days to prep for my exam so hoping I can stay somewhat focused considering everything else going on.

cherish these days

Our little man turned 15 months old on the weekend and I can hardly believe how much he already knows. He may not talk yet but he sure knows how to communicate - by grunting or using his hand to push things away when he doesn't want them. Not sure of his stats - height and weight, as we have not been to the doctor or health nurse in a while. I find myself saying that I wish he was a bit older so we could do more stuff with him but know that I should not wish these days away and cherish them as soon he won't be my little baby anymore.

These days he is copying everything he sees. In the mornings he gets his teeth brushed and then stands on the stool and pretends to spit in the sink just like Carter - but of course he spits all down the cupboard as he is not quite tall enough to hit the sink. He loves to grab the tv remote and point it at the tv and push the buttons while grunting. He has also decided that he needs to eat with a fork and is very good at it for just starting- as long as someone puts something on it, it is like a conveyor belt to his mouth.

The best thing he has picked up on is being my laundry helper. As we have a 4 level split and I usually have something in my hands, I tend to through dirty laundry downstairs one flight at a time by kicking it. Cohen has decided that anything (clothes only) on the stairs is to go in the laundry so he pushes them down both flights of stairs (a few stairs at a time) and into the laundry room for me. He will also put every piece of wet clothes into the dryer if I hand them to him and sometimes if I am not watching careful, he slips some of the dirty stuff in there too. He also loves to help unload the dishwasher, handing me all the "dirty" dishes. I can't wait til he can talk to find out what is going on in that head.

He loves to eat anything his brother has - see them chowing down on popcorn. Of course he also and eats way better when his brother feeds him then when we do. That brotherly bond starts at an early age I guess.

Sandwich generation

It is hard to believe that I am becoming part of what is referred to as the "sandwich generation". My parents had us later in life (early to mid 30's) and I have done the same with my children. That leaves me at 36 with 2 small children and parents aged 70 and 75. I still feel like I should be the child in this situation but am now struggling to do everything possible to raise two wonderful and healthy boys, while trying to keep my parents young and healthy. I have really noticed them "getting older" these past couple years and it scares me to death. My dad was just diagnosed for the 3rd time with cancer and it is not looking very optimistic this time - I can't even fathom life without him. He is the strongest man I know but this one has hit him really hard, as he has not been able to eat for months and is fading away. I can only hope that he has the strength to fight this one too.

My brother is struggling with severe back issues as his surgery never worked and wish I could do something for him as he is in pain every day. The sad thing is that he is only 38 and has many years to deal with this, likely only to get worse. I am undergoing more tests to find out what is wrong with my hormones with no answers yet either. The only positive thing these days is that Cohen's cystic hygroma has all but disappeared by itself.

Growing up and getting old really sucks but I am so thankful for what I do have.
